One of the frequent questions jobseekers ask me as a professional CV writer is whether they should include their hobbies in their CVs or leave them out? Important question! And as usual, I’ve got the perfect answer.

First, I want to say that that is a wrong question. As far as CV writing is concerned, the right question should be whether the inclusion of your hobbies and interests will address the needs of the employers and help you generate interviews.

If the answer is yes, then by all means and for your own good, include your hobbies in your CV. But if the answer is no, then for heaven’s sake, ensure your CV is without them. It’s straight and simple.

Now, let’s get practical.

Let’s assume that you want to apply for the position of a reporter in a certain newspaper company, and one of your hobbies is monitoring happenings in your environment. This aligns with your job and reveals your personality; it’ll do no harm if you include it. On the other hand, if your hobby is weaving, then including it in your CV would be useless and could count against you.

So, no matter your hobby or interest, just ensure it aligns with the position you want to apply for and it addresses the needs of the employers.

Burning question answered. Go and write a CV that makes immediate impact with employers.
